QuoteIsrael's intelligence agency has warned that Jewish extremists may assassinate an Israeli leader to endanger the Mideast peace process.

The head of intelligence agency (Shin Beth), Yuval Diskin told Israel's weekly cabinet meeting that he is "extremely worried" that right-wing extremists, who oppose negotiations over the future of Jerusalem (al-Quds) and the West Bank, may assassinate an Israeli leader in an attempt to foil peace moves with the Palestinians.

Diskin's remarks come as Jewish extremists have increased their threats and violence against Israeli security forces operating in the occupied West Bank and also days before the 13th anniversary of the killing of prime minister Yitzak Rabin by a Jewish extremist.

"As we mark the anniversary of Rabin's assassination the Shin Beth has identified among this extreme right-wing group... a willingness to use firearms in order to stop political processes and target political leaders," he said.

Outgoing prime minister Ehud Olmert also warned of growing lawlessness among West Bank settlers.

"There is a group, that is not small, of wild people who behave in a way that threatens proper law and governance. . . . This is unacceptable and we cannot countenance it," Olmert said, referring to groups of settlers that have clashed repeatedly with Israeli soldiers and Palestinians in the past week over the evacuation of an unauthorized outpost they set up in the West Bank city of al-Khalil.

The fifth Israeli premier was killed in 1995 by an Israeli extremist opposed to the Oslo Accords. The accords were officially signed in Washington D.C. in September 1993.
