Ambassador to Kazakhstan demands Foreign Ministry launch investigation against his deputy due to 'negligence bordering on criminal action.' Foreign Ministry spokesman: Our delegates are not in the habit of poisoning each other

Israel's Ambassador to Kazakhstan has filed an official complaint with the Foreign Ministry, demanding an investigation against his deputy on suspicion that the latter poisoned him due to "negligence bordering on criminal action."

Foreign Ministry officials harshly reprimanded Ambassador Yisrael Mei-Ami for putting this suspicion on paper, demanding that he take it back. Due to the severe complaint, the ministry decided to send a special inspector to the Kazakh capital of Astana on Monday to look into the odd affair.

The affair began when Mei-Ami complained that his apartment was infested with cockroaches and harmful insects. The embassy called a local pest control company, but the problem was not solved.

When Ziv Bilous, the deputy ambassador and the administration officer, returned to Astana following a Passover vacation, he was asked to solve the problem. He asked a local maintenance person to disinfest the apartment using pest control substances bought in a store.

The ambassador returned to his apartment and felt unwell. He was rushed to the hospital with poisoning symptoms and was hospitalized for one whole day.

When he returned to the embassy, Mei-Ami sent the Foreign Ministry an angry telegram titled, "The ambassador's poisoning." In the telegram, he detailed the chain of events and demanded that an investigation be launched against his deputy due to "negligence bordering on criminal action."

Foreign Ministry Deputy Director-Generals Yossi Regev and Pini Avivi spoke to the ambassador and demanded that he change the wording of the complaint, which they said was "inappropriate". Mei-Ami said he would consider their request.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Yossi Levy said in response, "I can assure you that the Foreign Ministry delegates are not in the habit of poisoning each other. As far as we know, the relations between the ambassador and his deputy are intact. In any event, the Foreign Ministry has appointed a person to look into the details of this puzzling affair."
