CDC Considers Promoting 'Universal Circumcision'

In an effort to reduce the spread of HIV, public health officials are considering the promotion of "universal circumcision" for all baby boys born in the United States.

The move comes after officials analyzed the results of several studies that show in African countries hit hard by HIV, men who were circumcised reduced their infection risk by half, the New York Times reported. However, those studies focused on heterosexual men who are at risk of getting HIV from infected female partners. The main issue in the U.S. is men who have sex with men.

In 2008, the CDC estimated that more than 56,000 people were newly infected with HIV in 2006 (the most recent year that data are available). Over half of those new infections occurred in gay and bisexual men.


Meanwhile, critics of the recommendation said it subjects newborn boys to "medically unnecessary" surgery without their consent.

But Dr. Peter Kilmarx, chief of epidemiology for the division of HIV/AIDS prevention at the CDC, told the Times that any step that could stop the spread of HIV must be given "serious consideration."

"We have a significant HIV epidemic in this country, and we really need to look carefully at any potential intervention that could be another tool in the toolbox we use to address the epidemic," Kilmarx told the newspaper. "What we've heard from our consultants is that there would be a benefit for infants from infant circumcision, and that the benefits outweigh the risks."

An official draft of the proposed recommendations by the CDC is due out by the end of the year. In the meantime, the CDC is hosting its National HIV Prevention Conference in Atlanta this week.

Circumcision does not shield men from STD

Circumcision does not appear to shield men from the types of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) common in the developed world, according to new research by Dr. Nigel P. Dickson and colleagues in the Journal of Pediatrics.from New Zealand.

To investigate, the researchers, at the University of Otago in Dunedin, followed 499 men born in 1972 and 1973 up to age 32. About 40 percent of the men had been circumcised in early childhood.

Among circumcised men, 23.4 percent reported having had any type of STD by age 32, compared to 23.5 percent of the uncircumcised men.

The most common STDs reported were genital warts, Chlamydia and genital herpes. There was no statistically significant difference in rates of STDs even after the researchers adjusted for sexual behavior and socioeconomic factors.

Another recent study from New Zealand found that circumcision appeared to halve the rate of STDs among men up to age 25, Dickson and his colleagues note. However, they add, that study was done in a smaller group of individuals with a lower rate of STDs than that reported in the current study, while fewer men in that group had been circumcised.

"Although the reason for the different findings in the 2 cohorts is unclear, when our findings are considered in the context of other recent population-based studies in developed countries, it appears unlikely that circumcision has a major protective effect against common sexually transmitted infections in these populations, although a small effect cannot be ruled out," the researchers conclude.

The near universal circumcision of all males born in the U.S. for most of the 20th century already indicated in no uncertain terms that America was being prepared to go under Talmudic law and that genital-obsessed Jews like Edgar Schoen and Thomas Wiswell were in charge of the medical establishment. Dr. Spock, a Jew, also had a huge part in spreading the illness of male genital mutilation throughout the English-speaking world. It was also quite common in Australia, New Zealand and Canada, and in the UK among the upper classes until the gubmint stopped covering the mohels' insurance. Interestingly, Spock "retracted" (haha) his "recommendation" late in life, saying something like he believed that lacking any compelling immediate danger parents should leave their boys' pee-pees alone. Gee, why wasn't that reversal widely publicised?

The ridiculous thing is that, if circumcision prevented or reduced AIDS, how come the US has an "epidemic" rate when the vast majority of adult males are already mutilated? Isn't it supposed to be a prophelactic?

The rate of AIDS infection is far lower in Scandinavian countries, where (apart from Joeblow) the circumcision rate is next to nothing. They also don't have a problem with UTIs, another canard used to promote circumcision.

What's the AIDS situation like in Israel?

The total number of AIDS sufferers in Israel is around 4,300. While health officials say most are gay men or intravenous drug users, the incidence of AIDS also is on the rise among heterosexuals, especially teenagers.

Since 1981, 4,141 HIV carriers and AIDS patients have been diagnosed, 946 have died or left the country, and about 4,300 here are still living with the virus.

Tel Aviv's Sourasky Medical Center said that AIDS is affecting an ever-widening population.

"The figures are very worrisome and point to a dangerous trend," said Dr. Dan Turner, head of the AIDS center at the hospital.
