QuoteThe Zionist regime has said former US president Jimmy Carter's mission to work out a ceasefire with Hamas leaders has failed.

Hamas presented nothing new in its demands for a truce during Carter's recent meetings with officials of the group, said Amos Gilad, political advisor to war minister Ehud Barak, on Tuesday.

Meshaal has not budged in his demands, and thus the Carter mission failed, Gilad told Israel's army radio on Tuesday.

Following his meeting with Meshaal, Carter criticized Israel and the US for refusing to meet with Hamas 'who must be involved'.

Hamas refused to accept Carter's proposal for a one-month suspension of rocket fire from Gaza Strip into occupied territories. The Hamas leaders said they "couldn't terminate unilaterally because they didn't trust Israel to follow up by lessening their attacks on Gaza and in the West Bank," Carter said.

The Zionist regime's prime minister Ehud Olmert refused to meet Carter.

The US administration said earlier this week it opposes Carter's plan to meet with Hamas. The White House has distanced itself from the meetings, saying Carter is not representing the United States.
