White House rejects Carter racism claim

The White House says President Barack Obama 'does not believe that much of the opposition against him is based on 'the color of his skin'.

The White House has rejected claims by former US president Jimmy Carter that much of the opposition against President Barack Obama is based on racism.

White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said President Obama 'does not believe that the criticism comes based on the color of his skin'.

"We understand that people have disagreements with some of the decisions that we've made and some of the extraordinary actions that had to be undertaken by this administration," Gibbs added.

Carter said on Wednesday that he believed much of the anger against President Obama's health reforms and spending plans was based on racism.

"I think an overwhelming portion of the intensely demonstrated animosity toward President Barack Obama is based on the fact that he is a black man, that he's African American," Carter said.

He added that there was 'an inherent feeling among many in this country that an African-American should not be president'.

Carter was referring to a massive taxpayers' demonstration in Washington and angry town hall meetings directed against the president's healthcare reforms and spending plans in the past weeks.

On Tuesday, the US House of Representatives rebuked Republican lawmaker Joe Wilson for shouting 'You lie!' at Obama during a speech last Wednesday, describing it as 'a breach of decorum'.

Wilson's remark came in response to a passage of President Obama's address on healthcare to Congress in which he asserted that his reforms 'would not apply to those who are here illegally'.

Wilson maintained that his personal apology to President Obama should have been enough to resolve the matter, saying 'the issue was over'.
