QuoteAn Afghan official says he received information that Al-Qaeda figurehead Osama bin Laden is hiding in northern Pakistan bordering Afghanistan.

Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden is hiding in Pakistan's northwestern Chitral region bordering Afghanistan, AFP reported, citing an Afghan intelligence official.

Afghan authorities received information about bin Laden's whereabouts four or five months ago, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity. He didn't elaborate, according to the report.

There have been no confirmed sightings of Bin Laden since he escaped US-led forces in the Tora Bora region of Afghanistan in December 2001.

He has recorded at least four video and audio tapes since last September from his presumed hiding places on the border between Pakistan and Afghanistan.

The US invaded Afghanistan in 2001 under the pretext of bringing bin Laden to justice. However, Washington halted the search for the al-Qaeda leader once it had gained control over Afghanistan.

Pakistan's government has previously denied bin Laden is hiding in its tribal regions, and said he is in Kunar province in neighboring Afghanistan.

Al-Arabiya television reported last week that Pakistani sources had said US and Afghan officials had discussed launching military operations in Pakistan's northern areas in light of information that bin Laden was there.
