ClimateGate -- the controversy surrounding the leaked e-mails from the Climatic Research Unit at Britain's University of East Anglia -- means not only a credibility problem for some of the world's leading climate researchers. It also means a credibility problem for the U.N.'s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, whose latest influential report, known as the AR-4, calls evidence of global warming "unequivocal."

These IPCC findings are largely based on the work of CRU, whose scientists are shown in the leaked emails to have suppressed "inconvenient" data, ruthlessly excluded some scientists from peer-reviewed journals and flouted Freedom of Information laws governing public documents,

All this might seem alarming to someone who relied on CRU studies, but not to Rajendra Pachauri, who chairs the IPCC. "This private communication in no way damages the credibility of the AR4 findings," he told Reuters. "The entire report writing process of the IPCC is subjected to extensive and repeated review by experts as well as governments."

Climate change sceptics that pedal 'muddled and unscientific' thinking could stop the world from tackling global warming, Lord Stern of Brentford has warned.

The row surrounding the science behind climate change ignited last week after leaked e-mails appeared to suggest that scientists at the University of East Anglia had manipulated climate change data.

The allegations were denied, but it led to sceptics claiming with renewed vigour that man made global warming is being exaggerated by the scientific community.

However, launching a report that argues for a tough deal at the UN Climate Change Summit in Copenhagen, Lord Stern said the evidence for man made pollution being responsible for climate change was "overwhelming".

"The evidence is overwhelming. People have the right to speak up but if they are muddled and confused then they do not have the right to be described as anything other than muddled and confused on the basis of the arguments they set out and what is wrong with them," he said.

The former World Bank economist refused to comment on the University of East Anglia scandal itself, but said that anyone denying the science of climate change was "fundamentally wrong" given the amount of evidence that has built up over the last 200 years.

OTTAWA — Environment Minister Jim Prentice dismissed the conspiracy theories attached to the "climategate" allegations, insisting global warming is real and Canada needs to cut emissions.

The controversy surrounds the temporary resignation of Phil Jones, head of the Climatic Research Unit at the University of East Anglia, in the U.K., who is stepping down temporarily amid allegations of misconduct.

It all began when hackers stole thousands of e-mails at the research unit sent between top climate change scientists suggesting they suppressed contradictory research.

"What I take from what's happened at the East Anglia institution is that there were some serious allegations of impropriety and some serious questions about the quality of the scientific work that was done there," Prentice said. "It does not change the position of Canada ... The science overall is relatively clear on all of this and as a conservationist and as a responsible environmental steward Canada wants to see carbon emissions reduced."

Professor in climate change scandal helps police with enquiries while researchers call for him to be banned

The scientist at the heart of the climate change email scandal was today interviewed by police about the scandal.

Two plain clothes officers arrived in an unmarked car in the afternoon and took Professor Phil Jones to Norfolk Police's headquarters in nearby Wymondham to give a statement.

Sources said the interview concerned the theft of emails from the university and alleged death threats since the contents of the emails were released, adding he was being treated as a 'victim of crime' rather than a suspect in any criminal investigation.

Detective Superintendent Julian Gregory added: 'He is one of the people assisting police with their enquiries.'

A spokeswoman for the University of East Anglia refused to comment and said Professor Jones would not be adding to a statement he released on Tuesday.

The Federal Government's third attempt at getting its emissions trading scheme through Parliament already appears to be heading for defeat.

The Government says it wants to give the Opposition another chance to support the legislation.

It plans to reintroduce the scheme in February, even though the Senate yesterday rejected it for a second time.

But Opposition Leader Tony Abbott says he expects the Coalition's position to harden over the summer break.

He has ruled out taking an emissions trading scheme or a carbon tax to the next election as Coalition policy and says there is "very little" chance the Coalition would vote for one in February.

A fair reading of the e-mails reveals nothing to support the denialists' conspiracy theories. In one of the more controversial exchanges, UEA scientists sharply criticized the quality of two papers that question the uniqueness of recent global warming (S. McIntyre and R. McKitrick Energy Environ. 14, 751–771; 2003 and W. Soon and S. Baliunas Clim. Res. 23, 89–110; 2003) and vowed to keep at least the first paper out of the upcoming Fourth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). Whatever the e-mail authors may have said to one another in (supposed) privacy, however, what matters is how they acted. And the fact is that, in the end, neither they nor the IPCC suppressed anything: when the assessment report was published in 2007 it referenced and discussed both papers.

If there are benefits to the e-mail theft, one is to highlight yet again the harassment that denialists inflict on some climate-change researchers, often in the form of endless, time-consuming demands for information under the US and UK Freedom of Information Acts. Governments and institutions need to provide tangible assistance for researchers facing such a burden.

While we all have every confidence he will soon be back in charge of the CRU (Creative Research Unit), devising ever more inventive "tricks" to "hide the decline", I suggest the interim title of The Piltdown Institute of Mann-made Global Warming.

Speaking of Michael Mann, the jolly hockey stick merchant himself is also undergoing investigation – not to worry, it is of the most grudging and perfunctory kind – at Pennsylvania State University. The University's statement announcing the investigation is so complimentary to Mann, it almost reads like the press release of the verdict, published prematurely.

But there is a lot of this unhealthy investigative mentality manifesting itself in America. Today, on Capitol Hill, the House Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming will question two top officials of the Obama administration: White House Office of Science and Technology Policy Director John Holdren and Jane Lubchenco, head of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Leaked e-mails allegedly undermining climate change science should be treated as a criminal matter, Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) said Wednesday afternoon.

Boxer, the top Democrat on the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, said that the recently released e-mails, showing scientists allegedly overstating the case for climate change, should be treated as a crime.

"You call it 'Climategate'; I call it 'E-mail-theft-gate,'" she said during a committee meeting. "Whatever it is, the main issue is, Are we facing global warming or are we not? I'm looking at these e-mails, that, even though they were stolen, are now out in the public."

The e-mails, from scientists at the University of East Anglia, were obtained through hacking. The messages showed the director of the university's Climate Research Unit discussing ways to strengthen the unit's case for global warming. Climate change skeptics have seized on the e-mails, arguing that they demonstrate manipulation in environmental science.

Boxer said her committee may hold hearings into the matter as its top Republican, Sen. James Inhofe (Okla.), has asked for, but that a criminal probe would be part of any such hearings.

"We may well have a hearing on this, we may not. We may have a briefing for senators, we may not," Boxer said. "Part of our looking at this will be looking at a criminal activity which could have well been coordinated.

"This is a crime," Boxer said.

The Arctic ice cap is getting smaller, in apparent response to this global temperature increase. Sea level is rising, due to the thermal expansion of the oceans and, increasingly, to melting of the Greenland and/or Antarctic ice caps. It has been shown to most people's satisfaction that the Greenland ice cap is getting smaller.

There may be other factors, not yet accounted for, which could more or less suddenly emerge, and offset some or all of the future CO2 increase, the warming, the melting and the acidification that are predicted from these simple, well-known observations and the inferences and projections from models based on these observations. That's the nature of science in general. It is really almost impossible to prove beyond all doubt that nothing important is missing from a theory. As a trail sign in Yosemite used to say, "Caution, unknown hazards may exist." In addition, the ecological, economic and social consequences of global warming are also uncertain, adding another layer of unpredictability to this whole scenario.

Most scientists know and acknowledge these uncertainties, and reason as follows. We're in an unprecedented situation, with regard to the concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere and the rate at which it is rising. Because this is unprecedented, we are not sure what is going to happen. But global warming is very likely, and reasonably probable outcomes could be fatal. Ignoring it would be like Russian roulette. Want to play? I do not.

This is the only part of this issue that I don't understand. All the evidence and the signs I've seen presented point to man-made global warming being a fraud. However if it's a fraud then why are these outfits like 'Pajamas Media' taking that stance? They are as neocon/Zionist as it gets. But maybe it's just one segment of the establishment vs. another. I'd probably side with them on issues like gun control and abortion as well. But they're the type of people that would promote ideas like that people who are dying of serious illnesses shouldn't be allowed to use cannabis and should be sent to jail for it or like that all Arabs should basically be eliminated so it's hard to trust them.

Phil Jones tried to hush my paper. SUNY Albany won't discuss the investigation my paper initiated. And QUB ignored my three FOI requests for their data.

The Fraud Is Everywhere

Some of the emails leaked in Climategate discuss my work. Following is a comment on that, and on something more important.

In 2007, I published a peer-reviewed paper alleging that some important research relied upon by the IPCC (for the treatment of urbanization effects) was fraudulent. The emails show that Tom Wigley — one of the most oft-cited climatologists and an extreme warming advocate — thought my paper was valid. They also show that Phil Jones, the head of the Climatic Research Unit, tried to convince the journal editor not to publish my paper.

After my paper was published, the State University of New York — where the research discussed in my paper was conducted — carried out an investigation. During the investigation, I was not interviewed — contrary to the university's policies, federal regulations, and natural justice. I was allowed to comment on the report of the investigation, before the report's release.

But I was not allowed to see the report. Truly Kafkaesque.

The report apparently concluded that there was no fraud. The leaked files contain the defense used against my allegation, a defense obviously and strongly contradicted by the documentary record. It is no surprise then that the university still refuses to release the report. (More details on all of this — including source documents — are on my site.)

My paper demonstrates that by 2001, Jones knew there were severe problems with the urbanization research. Yet Jones continued to rely on that research in his work, including in his work for the latest report of the IPCC.

Misconduct at Queens University of Belfast

Arguably, the biggest concern with global warming is that warming itself will cause further warming. For example, the polar ice caps reflect sunlight back into space, thereby cooling Earth. A global warming theory suggests that if the caps shrink due to warming, then they will reflect less sunlight and so Earth will warm even further. It is possible that Earth warms so much that it reaches what is called a "tipping point," where the global climate system is seriously and permanently disrupted — like when a glass of water has been tipped over and the water cannot realistically be put back into the glass.

No one knows for sure how much Earth would have to warm before it reaches the tipping point — though about a thousand years ago, there was a time known as the Medieval Warm Period when much of Earth appears to have been unusually warm. It is not currently known just how warm the Medieval Warm Period was, but clearly the warmth then was below the tipping point because Earth's climate continued without problem.

You can tell who is part of the conspiracy based on their usage of terms. I would have to say all major journals are already controlled so if there is any political angle to be had by a study, then they will support the globalists position. Here they use the term "denialists". For all of us who have been studying things like the holocaust ("or what it was supposed to have been"), we've heard this use of the term denial before. Rather than approaching the situation by saying something like, "...those who support other views".

Look also how they attempt to spin the issue around and attack the other side. I had this done recently to me on a web forum where I was discussing how technology is going to be used in an attempt to enslave it. At the very end of a response from this disingenuous individual, who creatively edited quotes of me to intentionally distract and deflect from the issues I was discussing, he suggested that I find a "more receptive audience", even though he was the only one with such an attitude. He said people over at "stormfront" are talking about it maybe try there. So, I can only assume this guy was a jew due to the way that he deflected attention to the central issue by intentional creative editing. I'd love to be able to call him out but this other website doesn't appear to have a lot of people awake to these issues, so for me it's a matter of baby steps. Baby step lead the forum along the trail of facts leading up to the conclusion of who is behind today's serious problems.

Emails stolen from the University of East Anglia allegedly show scientists were willing to manipulate data on climate change. Climate change sceptics say the scandal casts doubt on the argument that man made greenhouse gases cause global warming.

The row is in danger of scuppering an international deal at Copenhagen later this month to tackle temperature rise.

In order to limit damage to the scientific community and public trust in the science around climate change, the UEA have launched an independent inquiry.

It will be headed by the distinguished Scottish civil servant and former principal and vice-chancellor of the University of Glasgow, Sir Muir Russell.

Belief in global warming had long had a tinge of theology about it, a form of cultism that adherents and defenders elevated to a holy crusade.

Any who questioned the orthodoxy were branded as heretics. Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said that climate-change skepticism is "treason" and exhorted that "we need to start treating [skeptics] as traitors." In 2007, the Weather Channel's Heidi Cullen said that meteorologists who were skeptical of man-made global warming should be decertified. The e-mails from the University of East Anglia's Climate Research Unit reveal systematic attempts by high priests of this religion to silence scientists who disputed their rigged findings.

The purveyors of the global-warming theology certainly benefited. They enjoyed professional success, received millions of dollars in grants, had influence in policy circles, were invited to international conferences and found personal validation and fame. Never before had it been sexy to have "climate scientist" on your resume.

Proper science unlocks secrets; it does not create them. The scientific method is a social enterprise and requires openness to function properly. Data must be freely available and methodologies subject to strict scrutiny in order to assess whether results can be verified, reproduced and subjected to reliability tests. There is no reason to trust any results based on hidden data and some very good reasons to distrust them. This is the gist of a prospective lawsuit against NASA by Christopher C. Horner of the Competitive Enterprise Institute, which calls on the space agency to produce the climate data it has been keeping under wraps. These data are not classified information and should be part of the public record. NASA's stonewalling is suspicious and could augur that another scandal is brewing.

Even if a deal is reached at the UN climate change talks in Copenhagen next week it will only be the first step towards the far more radical cuts that are needed in global carbon emissions, Al Gore, the former US Vice-President, told The Times last night.

Mr Gore said that to avoid the worst ravages of climate change world leaders would have to come together again to set more drastic reductions than those now planned.

"Even a final treaty will have to set the stage for other tougher reductions at a later date," he said. "We have already overshot the safe levels of CO2 in the atmosphere."

Europe's flagship carbon trading scheme suffered a blow today as the Danish government was forced to rush an emergency law through parliament to clamp down on a virulent form of VAT fraud.

On the eve of the Copenhagen climate talks, which will attract world attention to emissions trading schemes, police and tax investigators across Europe are believed to be investigating hundreds of millions of euros worth of fraud involving carbon quotas originating in Denmark.

Since British, French and Dutch governments took similar action in the summer, much of the "carousel" fraud involving carbon credits moved to Denmark, where registration of carbon quotas for the European Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) is easy and a VAT rate of 25% makes the fraud attractive to international criminals.

Experts said today that Copenhagen had long been an accident waiting to happen in terms of carousel fraud.

The Climategate conspiracists are now blaming each other, with Michael Mann clouting his former friend Phil Jones with his hockey stick:

One of the scientists to whom the emails were addressed, Professor Michael Mann, the Director of the Earth System Science Center at Pennsylvania State University has moved to distance himself from some of the comments in the emails that suggest scientists did not want the IPCC, the UN body charged with monitoring climate change, to consider studies that challenged the view global warming was genuine and man-made.

Speaking to BBC Radio 4's The World Tonight, Prof Mann said: "I can't put myself in the mind of the person who wrote that email and sent it. I in no way endorse what was in that email."

Prof Mann also said he could not "justify" a request from Prof Jones that he should delete some of his own emails to prevent them from being seen by outsiders.

THE scientific consensus that mankind has caused climate change was rocked yesterday as a leading academic called it a "load of hot air underpinned by fraud".

Professor Ian Plimer condemned the climate change lobby as "climate comrades" keeping the "gravy train" going.

In a controversial talk just days before the start of a climate summit attended by world leaders in Copenhagen, Prof Plimer said Governments were treating the public like "fools" and using climate change to increase taxes.

He said carbon dioxide has had no impact on temperature and that recent warming was part of the natural cycle of climate stretching over ­billions of years.

If you have to argue your science by using fraud, your science is not valid.

Prof Plimer - author of Heaven and Earth: Global Warming, The Missing Science - told a London audience: "Climates always change. They always have and they always will. They are driven by a number of factors that are random and cyclical."

His comments came days after a scandal in climate-change research emerged through the leak of emails from the world-leading research unit at the University of East Anglia. They appeared to show that scientists had been massaging data to prove that global warming was taking place.

Watergate Redux: Break-ins Reported at Another Top Climate Research Center

Hmm.  Maybe the "gate" part of the ClimateGate moniker is more apt than we thought, as guest blogger Brad Johnson reports in this WR repost.

Two weeks ago, thousands of illegally hacked emails from a British climate research center were dumped on a Russian webserver, timed to influence the politics of of the international climate negotiations commencing next week in Copenhagen, Denmark. Beginning Thanksgiving week, conservative media and Republican politicians have compared the climate scientists whose private emails were hacked to Hitler, Stalin, and eugenicists, saying they are involved in a global conspiracy to defraud and possibly take over the world. The Climategate "scandal" — a swiftboating intimidation and smear campaign against science — is the right-wing rage from Stephen Dubner to Sarah Palin, Glenn Beck to Lou Dobbs. Like the original Watergate scandal involving right-wing operatives who burglarized the offices of their political opponents, the real crime is the original break-in.

It has now been reported that the University of East Anglia Climatic Research Center is not the only victim of such a criminal invasion: burglars and hackers have also attacked the Canadian Centre for Climate Modelling and Analysis at the University of Victoria in British Columbia:


Andrew Weaver, a University of Victoria scientist and key contributor to the Nobel prize-winning work of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, says there have been a number of attempted breaches in recent months, including two successful break-ins at his campus office in which a dead computer was stolen and papers were rummaged through.

These attacks go beyond simple burglary. University of Victoria spokeswoman Patty Pitts told the National Post "there have also been attempts to hack into climate scientists' computers, as well as incidents in which people impersonated network technicians to try to gain access to campus offices and data."

For thirty years, defenders of a pollution-based economy have intimidated, smeared, and suppressed climate science, using a playbook perfected by the tobacco industry and Karl Rove. Now — as the United States, led by President Barack Obama, finally appears ready to join the world in the fight against global warming — the opponents of reform are resorting to criminal desperation, harkening back to the paranoia-fueled extremes of Richard Nixon.
