Secession in the Air

By Patrick J. Buchanan

No, it is not 1860 again.

But with all the talk of the 10th Amendment, nullification and interposition, states rights and secession — following Gov. Rick Perry's misstatement that Texas, on entering the Union in 1845, reserved in its constitution a right to secede — one might think so.

Chalk up another one for those Tea Party activists who exploded in cheers when Sister Sarah brought up the dread word in endorsing Rick Perry in the primary.

Looking back in American history, however, these ideas, these sentiments, decried as insane inside the Beltway, were once as American as "The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere."

"I hold it that a little rebellion now and then is a good thing, and as necessary in the political world as storms in the physical," wrote Thomas Jefferson to James Madison from Paris in January 1787, about Revolutionary War Capt. Daniel Shay's anti-tax rebellion in Massachusetts.

In the Virginia and Kentucky resolutions, both of these founding fathers sanctioned the idea that states could interpose their own sovereignty and nullify acts of Congress. Both were enraged by the Alien and Sedition Acts of John Adams and the Federalists, written into law to combat sedition during the undeclared naval war with France.

On taking office, President Jefferson declared the acts unconstitutional, refused to prosecute those charged and freed the imprisoned writers.

In 1814, Timothy Pickering, another veteran of the revolution and secretary of state to both George Washington and Adams, was a force behind the Hartford Convention, which argued for New England's secession and reuniting with Great Britain. Massachusetts opposed Madison's War of 1812 that had caused the British blockade that destroyed their trade and prosperity.

The war's end and Jackson's victory at New Orleans, however, aborted the Hartford movement and finished off the Federalists forever.

In 1832, it was Vice President John Calhoun who inspired South Carolina to vote to nullify the Tariff of Abomination that was killing the cotton-exporting South and enriching Northern manufacturers. To the chagrin of Madison, Calhoun invoked his and Jefferson's Virginia and Kentucky resolutions in defense of Carolinian defiance.

In 1845, it was Massachusetts again. Ex-President John Quincy Adams declared that admission of Texas to the Union as a slave state might constitute grounds for secession and civil war.

With Abraham Lincoln's election in 1860 and Republicans, the Northern party, assuming power, South Carolina, Georgia and the Gulf states seceded.

But not until after Fort Sumter, when Lincoln called for volunteers to march south and crush the rebellion, did Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee and Arkansas secede, rather than remain passive or participate in a war on their kinfolk.

Unlike the issues of yesteryear that tore the Union asunder, Tea Party issues are not sectional but national. Yet, they are rooted in a similar set of beliefs — that the federal government no longer serves their interests, but the interests of economic and political forces that sustain the party in power.

In 1860, the South saw power passing indefinitely to a new regime, a Republican Party that represented high-tariff industrialists and New England radicals and abolitionists who despised the agrarian South and celebrated the raid on Harper's Ferry by the terrorist John Brown, who had sought to incite a slave uprising, such as had occurred in Santo Domingo.

What called the Tea Party into existence?

Some are angry over unchecked immigration and the failure to control our borders and send the illegals back. Some are angry over the loss of manufacturing jobs. Some are angry over winless wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Some are angry over ethnic preferences they see as favoring minorities over them.

What they agree upon, however, is that they have been treading water for a decade, working harder and harder with little or no improvement in their family standard of living. They see the government as taking more of their income in taxes, seeking more control over their institutions, creating entitlements for others not them, plunging the nation into unpayable debt, and inviting inflation or a default that can wipe out what they have saved.

And there is nothing they can do about it, for they are politically powerless. By their gatherings, numbers, mockery of elites and militancy, however, they get a sense of the power that they do not have.

Their repeated reappearance on the national stage, in new incarnations, should be a fire bell in the night to the establishment of both parties. For it testifies to their belief and that of millions more that the state they detest is at war with the country they love.

The secession taking place in America is a secession of the heart — of people who have come to believe the government is them, and not us.

Obama's problem, like the Bushes' in 1992 and 2008, is that one thing these folks are really good at is throwing people out of power.

After the Revolution of 1905, the Czar had prudently prepared for further outbreaks by transferring some $400 million in cash to the New York banks, Chase, National City, Guaranty Trust, J.P.Morgan Co., and Hanover Trust. In 1914, these same banks bought the controlling number of shares in the newly organized Federal Reserve Bank of New York, paying for the stock with the Czar\'s sequestered funds. In November 1917,  Red Guards drove a truck to the Imperial Bank and removed the Romanoff gold and jewels. The gold was later shipped directly to Kuhn, Loeb Co. in New York.-- Curse of Canaan

The Comments to this other article were actually pretty interesting:  Looks like they have a Jew DisInformationalist posting since it is Buchanan... The CSR

Why is this garbage? While I am not a conspiracy theorist, I do believe that some levels of our government withheld and purposely knew of events unfolding. I also am convinced that Israel also had intelligence withheld. Remember, much of the intelligence we received about Iraq came from Israeli Intelligence. The fact that much of it was flawed, should make us all question our and other government motives, no? One of the things our founders taught us was to question our government. If we do not trust them on some things, why would we trust them on others....

Its garbage because many many more professionals who work in the areas involved with these sorts of studies agree that there was no "controlled demolition" or any sort of CIA/FBI conspiracy to blow up any of the buildings that fell on that terrible day. Believing in this sort of conspiracy is just like believing JFK was shot by multiple people. Maybe he wasnt killed for the popularly given reasons, that is debatable, but many many studies have proven that it is not hard to do what Oswald did...yet people continue to act like they have some higher knowledge just because they read some nuts book or a blog.

Why is this garbage?...........It's not if you can think?(No longer popular in Amerika).
Historical Revisionism is the greatest thing since the printing press.(It simply means that investigations never end as long as technology brings in new evidence!)......How cool if one is in prison for rape and DNA proves that you could not be the rapist!

1. We know that the writer of FDR's "Day Of Infamy Speech" wrote it two weeks before the attack on Pearl Harbor!.....Seems odd huh?

2. The Gulf Of Tonkin incident has turned out to be a lie?...Great way to start a war in Vietnam?

3. JFK's last Executive Order was to slam the Federal Reserve, Pull out of Nam, and demand that the Israelis declare their Nukes!....Just a coincidence?

4. "Nanothermite", a military explosive soooo new that only the U.S., Russia, and Israel even have facilities to manufacture it, is found in the dust particles at ground zero of 911?.........While jewish mossad are filmed rejoicing at the attack?

5. All of America's manufacturing base has been offshored except "The Military Industrial Complex" that President Ike warned us about, as well as JFK's last speech regarding "Shadow Governments"?

What is the pefect "Military Coup"?...........One where the people have no idea that it has already taken place!!!......Watch "Obama" imitate a Neocon just to stay alive?

And I'm a Paleocon!

1. There is absolutely zero proof that FDR started even drafting his Day of Infamy speech before the evening of Dec. 7th.

2. The Gulf of Tonkin was an incident that took place during the Cold War with a communist country in open waters. Facts were not reported and distorted but the substance of what took place still happened. This is hardly a government conspiracy. Maybe breaking the ROE set at the time, but not a conspiracy to send thousands of Americans to die in a jungle.

3. JFK was an Irish kid that came down through dirty Irish mob style politics and was put into power by dirty mob people. Im sure a lot of people had reasons to shoot him, maybe him and his families breaking of promises to the people that put them in power to begin with had something to do with that, again, not a huge government conspiracy.

4. Actually there have been many many many people that came out and deftly debunked any sort of "nano thermite" conspiracy garbage, but as with all conspiracy theories and the people that love to push them in front of peoples faces, facts dont really matter.

5. Not sure what this has to do with 9/11 conspiracies.

And you strike me as a 9/11 truther labeling himself as a "paleocon" simply to add credit to his argument, like "Im not racist, I have a black friend!"

Even Popular Mechanics examined the collapse of the buildings and affirmed the official explanation. Truthers have this insurmountable problem: A black flag operation of this magnitude, complexity and repercussions, to say nothing of the coverup, is simply beyond the competency of our government. Except in movies. Or in the heads of conspiracy theorists.

Just what we need, another government investigation. How much will that cost us? Aren't we bankrupt?

"Nanothermite" is not cooked in a kitchen in an OBL cave in Tora Bora.

Ever tried to tell a man that his daughter is a whore?.......Some facts are just to painful for some people to wrap their mind around?....Regardless of the evidence.

"Even Popular Mechanics examined ..." Oh please. Popular Mechanics is a trade magazine and the writers of that piece did not college science credit among the lot of them. And even NIST shot down their ridiculous and impossible conclusion.

"many many more professionals who work in the areas involved with these sorts of studies agree that there was no "controlled demolition" or any sort"

Name one. I'd love to debate an actual scientist who would defend this joke.

No reputable scientist (who is not directly paid to do so) would put their name next to the absolutely ridiculous and impossible fairy tale that localized fires at the top of those massive steel buildings could collapse them into dust the way that was seen. It is so incredibly absurd that it is going to get exposed.

And FBI is not on the sides of the Clowns who still support the ridiculous fairy tale. The FBI endorses raising the scientific questions that are being asked and considers the 9/11 attacks an "Open" criminal investigation.

You have to be a complete and utter Moron to look at this thing closely and not see that the "official" explanation is not a complete joke

You try to give me the name of one reputable, independent scientist who defends the official story. You might be able to find about 3.

Meanwhile — forget the 1000+ architects and engineers —- take a look at these groups:

http://www.patriotsquestion911.com/professors.html

http://www.patriotsquestion911.com/pilots.html

Nobody who looks at the joke with any knowledge and gravitas will defend it. All you have is a bunch of frightened politicians and media figures afraid of being derided as unpatriotic. And then you have the anonymous Morons on the internet.

But the blackout on this story is breaking. First the Washington Times. How about former Reagan Administration official and WSJ Editor — is he a whacko too? As he says in his piece – some American will believe anything their government says – no matter how ridiculous. Well he's clearly referring to the naysayers above.
