Should 'Mein Kampf' be re-published?

The possibility of publishing Adolf Hitler's Mein Kampf with a modern commentary has elicited mixed reactions in Israel, after a prominent member of Berlin's Jewish community came out in favor of the idea this week.

Lala Suesskind, chairwoman of the Jewish community in the German capital, said on Sunday that reprinting the once-banned text would no longer break any taboos.

"The text opens the eyes of many people to Hitler's intentions and provides evidence for what should have been known at the time," Suesskind told the German news agency, DPA.

Stephan Kramer, general secretary of Germany's Central Council of Jews, told German radio that he too supported the publication of the 1925 book, but it needed commentary.

Holocaust memorial institutions in Israel weren't so eager to acquiesce.

"In my opinion, there's no need to republish the book, even for educational purposes," said Aya Ben-Naftali, a spokeswoman from Massuah, the Institute for the Study of the Holocaust.

"There isn't a history student in the world that doesn't already have access to Mein Kampf, and it's been that way for years. The text is there for those who want to research it."

Ben-Naftali explained that a mass publication of the book is unnecessary and even dangerous.

"The people that will buy the book are the same people that buy the Protocols of the Elders of Zion - they're not looking for a historical understanding. Anti-Semitism, real, authentic anti-Semitism exists just under the surface, and there's no need to strengthen it. In my opinion, republishing the book will only cause neo-Nazism and anti-Semitism to increase."

Despite those fears, the book's copyright is due to expire in 2015, a fact that has set off a great debate, both in German-Jewish circles and within the larger German public, as to what exactly should be done with the text.

After Hitler's death in 1945, the Bavarian government obtained the book's rights as part of the Allied "de-Nazification" program. Since then, the book has remained outlawed in Germany, along with the swastika and the stiff-armed Nazi salute.

But from the millions of copies disseminated before and during World War II, the book has been republished worldwide and translated into dozens of languages. Mein Kampf was a national bestseller when it hit stores in Turkey in 2005 before being banned, and the Arabic translation still enjoys tremendous popularity in the Arab and Muslim world.

An abridged Hebrew version of the text was quietly published in Israel in 1992, for use among Israeli students of German history.

Still, those in favor of republishing it with annotation, say that if they don't do it, German neo-Nazi groups and others - who would exclude the modern commentary - will.

"If Mein Kampf reached the public in Germany without commentary, that would be a problem," said Efraim Zuroff, director of the Simon Wiesenthal Center in Israel.

"Even if it's presented with an explanation, those who want to ignore that explanation could just stick to the text. The best thing to do would be to continue the ban in Germany, but I understand that this current situation can't continue forever, and [the German government] will have to choose what they want to do with it," he said.

Zuroff believed an annotated version, showing where history has proven the text wrong, and where Hitler's policies proved disastrous, would be the best option if the book were to be officially republished.

"Two hundred thousand American soldiers died fighting the Nazis," Zuroff said. "Twenty million Russians died. It is incredibly important that these facts be included in any sort of annotation because it's the only way to rob the book of its ability to cause racism and xenophobia."

Yad Vashem echoed Zuroff's sentiments, pointing to the necessity of a historical commentary to accompany the text.

"Yad Vashem doesn't see a problem with serious historians publishing an annotated version because it is already available online and elsewhere [without the commentary]," said spokeswoman Estee Yaari.

As far as using the text as an educational tool, however, Yaari was less forthcoming.

"We would have to see what it says before we could make that decision," she said.

Regardless, the debate over the book's future will most likely intensify as the copyright expiration draws closer, and the German government, who has taken great pains to distance itself from its Nazi past, will be forced to make a decision.

I checked this out of the public library, and as most of you know I am definitely not a nazi, i do not like to be ignorant of any view whether I agree with them or not. When I went to go check it out the librarian gave me a nasty look. I did not want to get into a big discussion over it so I just went on my way. then it got me thinking what if I'm now on a big neo-nazi red flag list. Not just because of Mein Kampf but all the weird books that I check out. Libraries are now completely computerized with bar codes.  If someone didn't know I was pseudo-intellectual they would think I was a fucking freak!

Now I don't recall where the German plans materialized.
In 1933 Einstein can to America with stolen atomic bomb plans
hoping the US would use it on Germany.
Well is wasn't until the 40s when a respected physicist evaluated
the plans and convinced Einstein the write a letter to FDR that
started the Manhattan project.  To months after the Trinity
Site we had airborne ready bombs? Hard to believe.

Mein kampf only enforces their lies and makes us look like nazis, like clark-kent said who knows maybe when you check it out you get tagged as a neonazi or something..Besides Hitler doesn't talk much about the actual historical pretexts and causes of WWI and he never mentions the 6 million Jews that they tried to pass as the holocaust of WWI. I'm not really solid with what I've been fed and I've tried to read about all alternative theories on history, It's just this is the first I've ever heard of this one. It sounds interesting I'd like to know where you got this, please tell me your source.
What I'm saying is if you only have one source then maybe that's the one that's erroneous. Your kinda all over the place trying to relate what it is you mean. Maybe lay it out in a chronology or timeline in a new topic. I'm sorry if i came across as ridiculing at first but it did sound ridiculous but now it sound like you actually believe it and I want to know why. Many people praise Nazi Germany and think they could do anything and really did it, and at the same time degrading what the allies achieved. I try to look at history with no bias either way. My understanding was Germany was working on the A-bomb but didn't have the natural resources to complete it nor did they have the delivery method to get any kind of bomb to the east coast of the states.

I think if they did have the bomb they would have launched it on one of those crummy V2 missles. If they had the bomb they could have stopped the Russians from the East and atleast had a negotiated surrender with the Western Allies, but I don't think they had any A-bombs. Sure they had the best tanks (which were matched technologically by the Soviets and outnumbered) but thats it. The Luftwaffe was destroyed in the Battle of London and the paratroopers were decimated at the invasion of Crete. Also they lacked any source of fuel save for the lands they occupied in the Soviet Union (which were lost after the battle of Kursk 1943). Honestly I don't think the Nazis had any chance of winning and they wasted a lot of their forces needlessly which just goes to show that their commanders were probably chosen and happy to send the goy to their death for the fatherland.

The German high command did a lot of mistakes that is hard not to think of them as morons. They knew they could never match the industrial capabilities of the Soviets and the Americans yet they opted to produce fancy and complicated tanks that brokedown on the battlefields, never had an interest in strategic bombers or the airforce for that matter (which was led by a half Jew Himmler). So I think the entire world war 2 was designed to make the goy lose as much blood as possible and establish the state of the chosen. The only strength they had was in their propoganda machine and we all know where that came from.

As far as rewriting history goes; it probably doesn't amount to a hill of beans.
As the author researcher progressed on his main topic he must have tossed in a few
other ideas. Where there is speculation or  chance of doubt; let fly with your own
theory. Perhaps the biggest example was keeping Hitler alive.  Right there you
would need tons and tons on data to prove it; but if it can fit into alternate history
why not give it a chance. I like it cause I can speculate about Hitlers sway of power
over AmerNazis in the 1960s. These would be people responsible for Forestall and
JFK assassinations. The Lyne rewrite was to show how the science at Tesla's
time had electrical science at the doorstep of 'free energy' devices.  An amazing
tale that would only mean perhaps the bickering of oil prices and resources of today
would become they the same way with 'free energy' devices made in foreign lands
and wars would continue to plunder 'free energy' resources.

It still amuses me to think of this particular conspiracy theory gives thoughts such
as the Nazi NWO ended up with a boat load of 'free energy' scientists in New Mexico
who can't go anywhere or say anything about 'free energy' or will die.
If not tuned in, the UFOs are 'free energy' devices made by Nazi scientists
ans engineers in New Mexico who will die if speaking of such things other
than telling lies about aliens.
