PARIS (Reuters) - France is considering banning performances by a black comedian whose shows have repeatedly insulted the memory of Holocaust victims and could threaten public order, Interior Minister Manuel Valls said on Friday.
He said his ministry is studying legal ways to ban shows by Dieudonne M'bala M'bala, a comedian repeatedly fined for hate speech who ran in the 2009 European Parliament elections at the head of an "Anti-Zionist List" including far-right activists.
Valls announced the move after Jewish groups complained to President Francois Hollande about Dieudonne's trademark straight-arm gesture, which they call a "Nazi salute in reverse" and link to a growing frequency of anti-Semitic remarks and acts in France.
"Dieudonne M'bala M'bala doesn't seem to recognize any limits any more," Valls said in a statement announcing the legal review aimed at banning his public appearances.
"From one comment to the next, as he has shown in several television shows, he attacks the memory of Holocaust victims in an obvious and unbearable way," he said.
France has Europe's largest Jewish minority, estimated at about 600,000, but also sees a steady emigration to Israel of Jews who say they no longer feel safe here.
In the worst recent anti-Semitic incident, a French Islamist killed a rabbi and three pupils at a Jewish school last year in the southwestern French city of Toulouse.
GESTURE GOES VIRAL
Dieudonne, as he is known on stage, has responded to the criticism from prominent Jewish figures by threatening to sue them for linking his gesture - a downward straight arm touched at the shoulder by the opposite hand - to the Hitler salute.
He calls the gesture "la quenelle" - the word for an elongated creamed fish dumpling - and says it stands for his anti-Zionist and anti-establishment views, not anti-Semitism.
The gesture has gone viral on social media recently, with mostly young fans displaying it at parties and sports events. Some do it while in the audience at live television shows.
Two soldiers were sanctioned by the army in September for making the gesture in uniform in front of a Paris synagogue.
"It's the Nazi salute in reverse," Roger Cukierman, head of the CRIF umbrella group of Jewish organizations, said after complaining about it to Hollande last week.
"Very clearly, Mr Dieudonne is developing a nearly professional anti-Semitism under the cover of telling jokes."
Dieudonne, 46, Paris-born son of a Cameroonian father and French mother, began his comedy career with a Jewish sidekick in the early 1990s and appeared in several films.
Originally active with anti-racist left-wing groups, he began openly criticizing Jews and Israel in 2002 and ran in the European elections two years later with a pro-Palestinian party.
He has been fined several times in France for defaming Jews. Police broke up his one-man-show in a Brussels theatre last year for suspected anti-Semitic hate speech, but he was not convicted.
When Radio France's Patrick Cohen asked on air last week if the media should pay so much attention to him, Dieudonne suggested the journalist should get ready to emigrate.
"When I hear Patrick Cohen speaking, I say to myself, you see, the gas chambers ... too bad," he said.

It's possible, but since Dieudonné probably doesn't speak much English, I doubt that FBI are concerned about him per se, but I bet CIA/Mossad are closely monitoring him to make sure he is contained. For now. They definitely don't want his ideas and definance spreading to people in the US who think like Farrakhan, Kanye West or any other so-called "uppity negros."

Only one news story from France about the tax rate. Of course they managed to get one about Hitler, and one news story about Pussy Riot being released from Prison, but nothing about Dieudonné and free speech. It's also interesting how both Alex Jones and Daily Stormer found themselves roughly on the same page with that stupid Duck Dynasty gay thing even though that was just a lame publicity stunt for television ratings/retail marketing purposes. But Alex Jones won't touch the Dieudonné story because Jones would have to name the Jew, but it looks like Daily Stormer is giving it some play.

France's firebrand comedian Dieudonné has cancelled a stand-up show after it was banned in three cities in as many days because of its anti-Semitic remarks. He pledged to soon present a new act that avoids the same kind of controversial content.

"One must accept the laws and rules that govern this democracy, or what little is left of it," a defiant Dieudonné told journalists in Paris on Saturday. "In my work as a comedian I was working on an idea. I think I pushed a debate to the limits of humor. Now the judges will have to make up their own minds."

Dieudonné made the announcement after a string of legal battles led to bans on his routine 'Le Mur,' or 'The Wall,' in the cities of Nantes, Tours and Orléans. A scheduled appearance in Paris – where the show was launched in June – was also blocked by authorities earlier in the day.

During the infamous show Dieudonné often targeted Jewish figures like radio show host Patrick Cohen. He also gave 'quenelles,' a gesture he coined and that has been described by French Interior Minister Manuel Valls as an inverted Nazi salute.

Wearing traditional African garments, he told journalists on Saturday that the "Dieudonné affair was over" and that his new act would focus on "Africa's place in the world and history."

The government-led ban on 'Le Mur' has sparked a passionate debate about free speech in France.

Alain Juppé, the conservative mayor of city of Bordeaux and a leading figure within the main opposition UMP party, has publicly embraced Valls' initiative to outlaw the comedian.

But Vincent Feltesse, a member of Valls' own Socialist Party who will run against Juppé in an upcoming mayor race, has called the wisdom of the measure into question.

Other observers have also warned about falling prey to Dieudonné's provocations.

In an interview with the Journal du Dimanche weekly, the respected French jurist Philippe Bilger said court bans on Dieudonné would turn a "mediocre celebrity" into a "victim".

Yankee Doodle was listening to the CBC - or maybe it was RCI - a few years ago, and there was a report about Ukrainians in Canada who had discovered that there was a guard from the Ukraine living in Canada, and they were trying to get the Canadian government to have him deported. 

Of course, the accusation of "antisemitism" was made.

The Ukrainians replied that that charge wasn't true, because if you could find a guard that wasn't a jew they wanted him to be deported, too.
