A former principal accused of molesting students at an ultra-Orthodox Jewish school in Melbourne has had her extradition hearing to Australia delayed.  Malka Leifer fled to Israel just hours after allegations of sexual abuse at the Adass Israel School in Elsternwick first surfaced in 2008, and has been there ever since.

It is understood Ms Leifer could face dozens of charges of indecent assault and rape if she ever returns to Melbourne.

Ms Leifer was first placed under house arrest in Israel last September but nearly a year later there still has not been an initial hearing on her extradition petition.

On Wednesday, her lawyers successfully argued in a Jerusalem court for yet another delay to her case, claiming she is suffering from "psychosis and stress".

Lawyer Yehuda Fried denied dragging the case out.

"I don't accept the word excuses. We are conducting a court procedure," he said outside the court.

"The Israeli law confirms that anyone in a psychotic state cannot be subject to legal proceedings."

He told reporters he was willing to spend years fighting the extradition and would appeal all the way up to the Israeli High court and Minister for Justice if necessary.

Attorney-General George Brandis's department said in statement: "Australia made a request to Israel for Ms Leifer's extradition as she is wanted to face prosecution in Victoria for 74 sexual assault offences.

Malka Leifer's father-in-law, a Jerusalem rabbi, suspected of child sex assault
Baruch Leifer, 70, was arrested last month but his name barred from publication; suspected of molesting a family member when she was 12; more accusations said too old to prosecute

Baruch Leifer was named Monday as the Jerusalem rabbi who was arrested last month on suspicion of molesting children several years ago.

A gag order barring publication of Leifer's name was lifted Monday at the request of the Kan public broadcaster.

Leifer's daughter-in-law Malka Leifer is currently awaiting trial in Australia on suspicion of dozens of incidents of molesting students when she was a school principal in Melbourne.

Baruch Leifer, a senior rabbi in the Khust Hasidic dynasty, is suspected of multiple indecent acts against a family member when she was 12 years old, according to Kan.

Additional complaints have been lodged against him, but in those, the alleged acts occurred too long ago to be prosecuted, the report said.

An investigation began following recent complaints received at the Beit Shemesh police station.

Police said last month — without naming Leifer — that the suspect committed indecent acts against minors in separate cases several years ago.

In September, a Melbourne court ruled that Malka Leifer must stand trial on 70 charges of child sex abuse at a Jewish ultra-Orthodox school where she worked.

Malka Leifer, an Israeli citizen who was extradited to Australia in January 2021, denies dozens of charges, including rape, indecent assault and child sexual abuse. The crimes allegedly took place between 2004 and 2008.

Leifer, 55, had fled Australia for Israel after the allegations against her surfaced in 2008, moving with her family to the Emmanuel settlement in the West Bank. Australian authorities pressed charges in 2012 and requested her extradition two years later.

Israel's ultra-Orthodox community has been shaken by sexual abuse allegations against several leading figures.

In December last year, prominent children's author and rabbi Chaim Walder died by suicide after the Haaretz newspaper published a story accusing him of sexually assaulting nearly two dozen people, including children — allegations he had denied.

The Walder story has been hailed as a potential turning point in the approach to sexual abuse cases within the very insular community.

Then in January, news broke that Dudi Shwamenfeld, a popular Haredi radio host, was accused by multiple women of sexual abuse, including one who said she was 16 when the abuse began.

Malka Leifer, Australian girls' school principal who fled to Israel, convicted of abusing students
https://www.jta.org/2023/04/03/global/malka-leifer-australian-girls-school-principal-who-fled-to-israel-convicted-of-abusing-students

A former principal at an Australian school for Orthodox girls has been convicted on 18 counts of abusing students, including a charge of rape, in a case that strained relations between Australia and Israel.

The conviction came more than two years after Malka Leifer was extradited from Israel, where she had fled in 2008 amid allegations that she had sexually abused three sisters who were her students at the Adass Israel school in Melbourne.

"To get to this moment is absolutely overwhelming. ... It was so unbelievable that we'd get to this time and we have — she is guilty," Dassi Erlich, one of the sisters, said after leaving the courtroom, according to Australian media.

Erlich and her sisters Elly Sapper and Nicole Meyer alleged that Leifer had abused them while they were her students from 2003 to 2007. Erlich's campaign, called Bring Leifer Back, aimed to pressure Australia and Israel to return Leifer for trial, and met with multiple prime ministers over the course of the years-long extradition battle that soured some Australian Jews on Israel.

Leifer was arrested in Israel in 2014 at Australia's request but was not extradited for nearly seven years while her attorneys claimed she was mentally unfit to stand trial. Israeli authorities initially agreed, but after an investigation showed she was living a normal life in a haredi Orthodox West Bank settlement, she was rearrested in 2018 and later cleared for extradition.

In early 2021, Israel announced that it would send Leifer to Australia to stand trial, saying the country had been the "victim to a fraud perpetrated by Leifer and her supporters."

Last year, a former Israeli minister, Yaakov Litzman, admitted to abusing his powers to try to protect Leifer from prosecution. Litzman, a haredi Orthodox politician, resigned from the Knesset and was sentenced to probation and a nominal fine as part of his plea deal.

Leifer had initially faced 74 charges stemming from the accounts of the alleged victims, was prosecuted on 27 charges and was convicted of 18 of them, including rape of a 17-year-old. The jury, which deliberated for nine days and at one point appeared deadlocked, acquitted Leifer of charges of rape and assault related to one of the sisters. She will be sentenced at a future date.

During the trial, prosecutors presented evidence showing how Leifer managed to escape Australia, showing that members of the school's board convened after learning of the allegations against her and that board members and Leifer booked tickets to Israel for later that night immediately after the meeting. (A 2016 film about the Adass Israel community of about 200 families alleged that the wife of a board member had purchased the tickets for Leifer, her husband and four of their eight children.)

This week, Australian authorities said they would not charge anyone there with aiding Leifer's flight, citing a lack of evidence.

Headmistress jailed after sexually abusing two girls at Australian Orthodox Jewish school
Malka Leifer has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for abusing two students
https://www.thejc.com/news/world/headmistress-jailed-after-sexually-abusing-two-girls-at-australian-orthodox-jewish-school-7Cg05O4QPDZP2aLScgfF95

A former principal of an Australian ultra-Orthodox Jewish School has been jailed for 15 years for sexually abusing two students.

Malka Leifer was in April found guilty of 18 sexual offences against sisters Dassi Erlich and Elly Sapper.

They include rape, indecent assault and penetration of a child aged 16 or 17. A jury cleared her of nine other charges.

Leifer, 56, former principal of the Adass Israel School in Melbourne had pleaded not guilty to all charges.

Leifer, who also holds Israeli citizenship, was extradited to Australia from Israel in 2021 after fleeing in 2008 when the accusations surfaced.

During a sentencing hearing on Thursday, Victoria County Court judge Mark Gamble set a non-parole period of 11 years and six months but said he would take the 2,069 days she already served into account.

The two sisters and another sibling, Nicole Meyer, had accused Leifer of sexually abusing them on the grounds of the school in Melbourne, in locked staff offices, on school camps and at Leifer's home between 2003 and 2007, when they were teenagers. A jury found Leifer guilty of offences against Erlich and Sapper.

According to an indictment, Leifer assaulted one of the sisters in 2006 after inviting her home to "sleep over for kallah lessons" - a kind of pre-wedding etiquette class that includes sexual education.

On other occasions, Leifer told the students she was preparing them to be wives, prosecutors told the court earlier this year.

"This will help you for your wedding night," Leifer allegedly said after one sexual assault.

Gamble said the sisters had endured a "cruel and frightening upbringing at the hands of a very abusive mother," received no sex education and did not recognise sexualized conduct.

Addressing the court, he added: "This case is striking for just how vulnerable each of the two victims was and for the calculating way in which the offender, Mrs Leifer took callous advantage of those vulnerabilities in order to sexually abuse them for her own sexual gratification.

"This is a serious aggravating feature in respect of all of the offences."

The court heard how school was part of a reclusive Jewish sect on the outskirts of Melbourne. "It was a life in which Jewish laws and customs were very important and strictly adhered to," Gamble added.

The Tel Aviv-born mother of eight maintains her innocence and Gamble said she had shown no remorse.

Leifer chose to watch her sentencing hearing by a video link from a high-security Melbourne women's prison rather than attend court in person. She is the prison's only Jewish inmate.

She began teaching at the school in 2001 and returned to Israel in 2008 the morning after she was stood down from her principal role because the allegations had come to light.

Australian police filed criminal charges in 2012 and the battle to extradite her from Israel which tested bilateral relations began in 2014. She returned in January 2021.
