Australian theatre director John Bell says he would like to see The Merchant of Venice's Jewish moneylender Shylock recast as a Muslim to reflect modern-day discrimination.
Bell, who runs production company Bell Shakespeare, made the comments on Monday night's Q&A, which was held at the Sydney Opera House.
The panel was asked by an audience member: 'In a country wrestling with its conscience about asylum seekers and the stigmatisation of the Muslim community as terrorists, what do you think a play like Othello or The Merchant of Venice has to say to us?'
