Anybody in Ireland will tell you this, and they might cite as an example the boxer, Barry McGuigan https://duckduckgo.com/?q=barry+mcguigan+boxer&atb=v116-4_f&ia=web, who is from Northern Ireland, and who, when he was a champion, was British, but as soon as he lost, in a Las Vegas heat-drenched fight, he became Irish.

I personally saw this while watching the British Open golf tournament a few years ago.  The golfer, Darren Clarke https://duckduckgo.com/?q=darren+clarke&atb=v116-4_f&ia=web, is from Northern Ireland, and: when he was leading the tournament, the British announcers referred to him as British; but, a little while later, as he was losing his lead, they referred to him as being from Northern Ireland; and, finally, when he ultimately finished well off the lead, they referred to him as Irish.

True story: he went from being British, to being from Northern Ireland, to being Irish in one afternoon.
