QuoteSawsan Chebli is fighting anti-Semitism today. Now the SPD politician admits: As a teenager, she hated Jews.

Chebli grew up hating Jews

Chebli's parents lived in Lebanon as Palestinian refugees from 1948 and came to Germany in 1970 as asylum seekers. The 45-year-old, who was born in West Berlin, talks about her own earlier attitudes towards Jews and admits that she felt anger and hatred as a young woman. "As a teenager, I held Jews responsible for the suffering of the Palestinians and for the fate of my parents. I was angry that Jews have their own state and that we are stateless and desperately poor," says Chebli.

The rethinking process took a long time
A rethinking did not start at Chebli overnight. "In any case, encounters with Jews and Israelis in Israel played a central role," explains the Berliner. "Over the years, out of anger and hatred, there has grown a desire to build bridges and bring young people together on both sides to overcome hatred," says Chebli.

Fighting anti-Semitism is everybody's business
Today Chebli campaigns against anti-Semitism. In the fight against anti-Semitism, the entire Arab and Muslim community is also called upon. Encountering projects, among other things, could help here. "Just as Arabs and Muslims as minorities expect the majority of society to stand up for them when they are discriminated against and attacked, they must not remain silent when Jews in Germany are threatened and attacked," explains Chebli. She also calls for compulsory visits to concentration camp memorials for everyone living in Germany.
