QuoteMICROSOFT DISCLOSES GOVERNMENT BACKDOOR ON WINDOWS OPERATING SYSTEMS
Wednesday, April 30th, 2008 @ 6:00 am | Privacy, News
Microsoft may have inadvertently disclosed a potential Microsoft backdoor for law enforcement earlier this week. To explain this all, here is the layman term of a backdoor from Wikipedia:

A backdoor in a computer system (or cryptosystem or algorithm) is a method of bypassing normal authentication, securing remote access to a computer, obtaining access to plaintext, and so on, while attempting to remain undetected. The backdoor may take the form of an installed program (e.g., Back Orifice), or could be a modification to an existing program or hardware device.

Hei Hu Quan

Great find Mike. So good that I had to move it to this section for more traffic and profile.

Cheers.

I assume they read everything, online and off that I do.  I think all of you guys should too. It's the way it is right now.  I say that like I expect it's going to get better.....  Linux would be a good idea it seems for anyone who needed to ensure privacy.  Stay strong folks.

The NSA is the telecom industry, or vice-versa, so it is indeed a good assumption that everything is monitored. I have long been considering moving over to Linux, or at least setting up a 2nd rig using Linux, but if that's the case, what would switching to Linux accomplish, apart from going to a more stable O.S. that doesn't fund global eugenicide?

To be fair, the backdoor app they mention is "Malicious Software Removal tool", which I have never installed as I saw no use for it (already have a firewall/antivirus, no need for extra crap), and did not want my info being sent to Microsoft anyways.

Also, I stopped getting updates a while ago so I don't have to worry about getting new versions of apps with backdoors to replace older ones without.  Not to say there are not already backdoor apps that come with XP, but it was made in 2001.  I remember when I used to get updates, especially auto updates that I checked first, when the list would show up, i would allow all of them to download and install EXCEPT the malicious software tool LOL

Vista however, is another issue, it is recent, and probably has some built in mumbo jumbo backdoor.  Stay clear of Vista, it sucks anyways :D

Keep on trucking XP users, just stay clear of "Malicious Software Removal tool".  Your information can already be obtained when using non-encrypted site-to-site transfers, and even then someone can get in the middle and have the data go through them and manage to decrypt it,  so it's all out there anyways.

Linux is better though (if you don't play games) :D

Peace.

True, but the computing resources needed to decrypt encrypted traffic make it impossible to monitor all encrypted traffic on a routine basis.

For a start, the source-code for the operating system is open for any competent programmer to review, so you can be pretty much guaranteed that any attempt to sneak in a backdoor would be quickly rooted out. Secondly, provided you stay away from bleeding-edge variants, it is very stable.  Ubuntu or Mint Linux are ideal Linux distributions for newcomers. Even the bleeding-edge variants such as Fedora are far more stable in everyday use than any Microsoft OS.  Third, the end-user experience of Linux is constantly improving, so these days you don't have to be a propeller-head to use it and it rivals MacOS and Windows in usability terms. Lastly, you don't just get an OS, you get a whole raft of applications too, including OpenOffice - a suite of office applications that rival the functionality offered by Microsoft Office.

Although I keep XP on my laptop and one of my desktops for music production, these days most of my online and routine computer use is carried out on Linux and I have yet to find anything to complain about.

And for even stronger security, go with NetBSD.
