The Hamas military wing says its fighters have killed or injured at least 360 Israeli soldiers since the start of Operation Cast Lead.

The al-Qassam Brigades announced Wednesday that its fighters have so far killed 40 Israeli officers and soldiers; injuring 320 others since Israel launched a military campaign in the densely-populated Gaza Strip on December 27, Al-Aqsa TV station reported.

Tel Aviv says it launched the aggression against Gaza to put an end to rocket attacks against southern Israeli towns. At least 1,001 Palestinians have died during the offensive, while some 4,580 others are reported wounded.

Hamas, the democratically-elected ruler of the coastal sliver, demands a cessation of an 18-month Israeli blockade on the Gaza Strip before its fighters suspend the rocket attacks.

In response to Israel's full-scale invasion, Hamas has stepped up rocket attacks on Israeli cities. On Wednesday Grad missiles hit several Israeli towns killing an Israeli and wounding several others in Ashdod.

According to the Al-Aqsa report, Al-Qassam said several Israeli soldiers had been killed and wounded on Wednesday after the resistance fighters attacked an Israeli position in al-Atatera region in Beit Lahiya.

Two more Israeli soldiers were killed by Hamas snipers in Al-Tawam neighborhood in Jabalia north of Gaza City.

Earlier in the day, Hezbollah's al-Manar TV reported that three Israeli generals and three soldiers were injured in Tuesday's fighting with the Palestinian resistance in the costal sliver.

The Israeli army, meanwhile, says it has only lost 12 soldiers during the 19-day-old operation.
