We are not heading to, but ARE in a techno-dystopia where will like the low-life with high-tech. It is of course necessary to have basic survial skills (hunting, gardening, guerilla-warface, ...), but most of use will countinue to live in the big cities. Take a look around, the new rebels aren't those who carry guns, but rather those who type on keyboards (forums, torrents, youtube, ...).

I believe that it is already useful to able to unlock phones, modify television box firmware, and deactive RFID. My opinion is that soon, very soon we will desire to modify the present/coming security devices that will be unleashed on upon us.

Here is a good site for basic education about electricity:

You don't need to know so much about theory, concentrate on practical knowledge. Skip phyics, calculus, thermodynamics, or anything that would take too long to learn. If there is a formula or term that is hard to understand, USE WIKI!

Take a look at different syllabuses/course plans at different collegues/universites and pretend that you are a student. If you focus only on Electronic Circuits, Power Electronics, Digital Systems, Integrated Circuits, Micro-Controllers, it will take you little more than a year until you will be able take an evil existing control device and change it into a good freedom aparatus.
