an estimated 15,000 people marched on the Dail (the Irish Parliament building) in Dublin today, protesting against govt cutbacks in public sector pay, jobs and services;  http://www.irishtimes.com/

it's shaping up to be a winter of discontent for the govt with this march and more planned for the coming months coinciding with 'Days of Action' (downing tools, etc, to attend rallies): for instance, tomorrow there will be a national Taxi drivers' stoppage to protest the over-supply of taxi licences given out by the govt (for a fee) resulting in there not being enough work to go around; the Irish Congress of Trade Unions (ICTU) has called for a National Day of Action on 6 November again to protest current and planned govt cuts;
a side story in the Irish Times reveals that the current Minister for Health and Tanaiste (Deputy Prime Minister), Mary Harney, was the Minister responsible for doubling the FAS budget during the boom years when we were told we had near full employment, a blatant act of favouritism for an agency which she had personally benefited from and had a family connection with http://www.irishtimes.com/search/index. ... =&x=20&y=9
