I picked up an AR-15 with a lot of bells and whistles this weekend and did a lot of target shooting. I shot around 300 rounds and I have to say that AR-15 is a damn fine gun. Anyone else like them or own them?

Just a damn good item to have when the SHTF.

Nothing like an AR-15.... always feels nice  :)  (and prices are getting better and better these days!)

or a good M1A .... (don't have one but fun)

or a Tactical Mini-14 ... (have one)

or a WASR 10... (have one)

I think for Americans in a SHTF situation... I'd go in the following order of importance (IMHO)...

1. a good AR-15 or a newer Mini-14
2. a pump action 12 gauge shotgun
3. a .22 LR semi-auto
4. a .40 (Glock, SW or Ruger)
5. a Remnington 700 or Moisin-Nagant 7.62-54 (always paranoid Russian ammo depleted first..  :| )  -- but you need the long touch just in case
-- for those on a budget (WASR-10s, CETMEs, SKS's (Norinco), Dragunov PSL 54c, Mini-14)
After the Revolution of 1905, the Czar had prudently prepared for further outbreaks by transferring some $400 million in cash to the New York banks, Chase, National City, Guaranty Trust, J.P.Morgan Co., and Hanover Trust. In 1914, these same banks bought the controlling number of shares in the newly organized Federal Reserve Bank of New York, paying for the stock with the Czar\'s sequestered funds. In November 1917,  Red Guards drove a truck to the Imperial Bank and removed the Romanoff gold and jewels. The gold was later shipped directly to Kuhn, Loeb Co. in New York.-- Curse of Canaan

Great list CSR!

Guns I own:

1) Kahr Arms PM9 - superb CC gun. Can be strapped to your leg or under your armpit or on your belt.
2) Remington 870 - can't beat the reliability of that thing. It can really take a beating. I inherited one from my dad and it still works really well. I use it for house protection.
3) Glock 17 - best pistol for the money. amazingly reliable and it won't fail on you. (I have it in 9mm). A true classic by now.
4) AR-15 - firepower and can double as a hunting gun. I also added a really nice scope to it and I also have a red-dot scope on it as well. It's great for anything within 500yd range... and maybe even farther than that.

I'm missing a good .22 gun... it's good to have one because ammo for it is plentiful.

Get a nice crossdraw or molle or LBE of your choice and you have a nice kit for quick deployment! Stock it with clips of course.

If you are an American, you shuld be well armed. Bad guys are well armed so you should be too. You never know if you'll have to use all this but be prepared. You don't want to rely on police or military for protection because they won't be able to or will be on the other side.

Gun control is very strict in Canada.

Hey F.T. sorry to hear about G.C. in Canada...

But don't you guys have Marstar?

I always wanted one of these... and the US can't import them   :

Also about the gear:

You know  I never had a mollee... I have a pretty good hunting jacket that is 6 clip/cartridge/stripper ready. It's kind of substitute if I pull it tight but of course it is not the same. It is more for reloading a shotgun.
I've got about 10 clips ready of x39 and .223 each for a BGO in case of an emergency.... and a couple of boxes of slug, buck shot, bird shot... Over the past year and a half, I've had more concern about (real) Gangs (carjackings, breakins, home invasions).  I've tended to hold my shotgun and mini-14 as the go-to guns with the shotgun as the first peace maker in case of a home invasion. The mini-14 and AK are both for situations where gun shots are heard nearby the house and I've got at least a minute to collect my gear.  I've had to get the Shotgun out once to stop a break-in so I naturally go for it if I hear trouble if you know what I mean.  I feel ready with it.  I'm looking at getting a SAIGA-12 gauge auto since they are full on peace makers with armed crowds.

I'm looking to add two Glocks or Rugers in .40 caliber (SR-9 is my first choice these days with the fixed trigger group...) . I'm trying to blend my arsenal from almost a pure hunter's armory (with a semi-auto) to an all around SHTF Castle-Neighborhood defender's arsenal.

why do you specify the newer mini-14, was there a significant change from the older ones.
also you know you can get a 22lr conversion kit for your glock, or even a 9mm kit (3 guns in 1).

CSR, pick up a $80 crossdraw vest and it will make all the difference. I love mine. This is what I have: http://www.midwesthuntersoutlet.com/ite ... DyOLrQE%3D (quick link off google... I'm sure you can find a better price on it as well).

SR9 is a damn nice gun and was clearly inspired by Glock and they're neck and neck. I'd still go for Glock because you can buy 33 round 9mm magazines for it and has a slight weight advantage. But why go for .40? .40 ammo is too expensive. I'd go for 9mm version.

Glock is a great choice and 9mm is simple and available.  I like the .40 stopping power but you have great point about investing in "ammo" long term. 9mm and 22LR are still cheap and plentiful. The SR-9 in 9mm is a great choice.  Hi-Point, high velocity grain rounds make a difference for the 9mm according to the stats.

From that report:
QuoteI carry a .45 when I can and a little Kahr PM9 when I can't.
Haha.. same carry gun as mine!

As for stopping power, that's true of 9mm when it's FMJ. But when you use jacketed hollow points, it doesn't make much difference. 9mm JHP bullets will stop even a crazed 240lb meth guy. There's so many JHPs on the market now that you can find one that offers best hydrostatic shock.

While I like .40 and .45 ACP, I can take two shots of JHP at the target and do a better job with it than with a single .40. Not to mention that Glocks come with 17 round mags that you can expand to 19 with a simple piece of plastic. And you can get 33 round mags. So all the caliber issues are not really issues.

There's a reason cops prefer more rounds over higher caliber weapons.... pistols ain't revolvers ;).

Just a damn good item to have when the SHTF.

i had a handgun lesson from a real knowledgeable friend about 2 months ago.  he started me out with a .45.  i got to load all the magazines.

i figured out that we left about 10 pounds of lead in the hillside.  he also had a 12 gauge shotgun and a 310 or 308 rifle, i forget.  he said the 12 gauge cartridges and the rifle bullets both were about 2500 foot pounds.

i was thinking, that quarry - in a national forest in Washington state, basically the logging companies set up a work site but eventually leave, then the local gun enthusiasts use that because it's a good place to do shooting.  right into a hillside.

so it gets about 2 sessions a day, every weekend day - 8 months a year.  there's a few tons of lead in that hillside.  and lead is $1 a pound, the spot price that is. the scrap price is less.

i was thinking, to get a metal detector and a shovel and a truck, & dig out the hillside.  melt it down etc.  there's probably more lead in those hillsides than in a typical lead mine.

we also went to Favela's, a gun  place in Seattle.  they had these .50 calibre Israeli pistols.  i thought, too bad every Palestinian can't have one of these, the goal being to stop the violence.  but i guess they don't have constitutional gun rights.

Raised in a hunting tradition I have always had a fondness for the 30-06 cartridge.  It is offered in so many flavors, one for every need:

The 55 grain accelerator at over 4,000 fps to the 220 grain, with many projectile weights and configurations in between.  The M1 Garand is possibly the most versatile military weapon design using this cartridge. Until the M1A and FN-FAL tweeked the M1's limitations with a bottom fed box magazine, the designer lost a little something when changing over to the 7.62 NATO round.  Yes, a cleanly mounted scope is difficult for an M1 while the M1A has a distinct advantage there, but this hindrance could be over come by keeping a scoped deer hunting rifle chambered for , of course, the 30-06.

It's a warm feeling  knowing that one could really reach out and touch somebody if need be.
I will gladly pay you Tuesday for a Hamburger today.

Tomas O'Crohan

The owner of one of the local gun shops declared:

"One day God created the 30-06 and then he rested."

It's hard to argue with that story. The 7.62 x 54 could be used interchangeably in this story IMO.

Hey reeler here's the updated version:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v-ufUxed ... re=related

You know, .30-06 is a good round for any need IMHO... hunting or home defense. I think it is a little easier to get a good Winchester gun in a .308 though. I'm very fond of rifles in the .308. I've shot them but don't own one. The Armalite A-10 or a good Springfield M1A are keepers if you get one.  It is definitely something "scary" at long range  :) :

QuoteThe .308 Winchester is one of the most successful hunting cartridges[8] in the world and has gained popularity in many countries as an exceptional cartridge for game in the medium- to large-sized class. In North America it is used extensively on Whitetail deer, Pronghorn and even the occasional Caribou or Black Bear. In Africa the .308 Win is one of the most popular calibres among Bushveld hunters and is used on anything from Duiker right up to the massive Eland. The .308 Winchester has sufficient energy to impart hydrostatic shock to living targets when rapidly expanding bullets deliver a high rate of energy transfer.[9][10][11][12]

But of course:

QuoteA survivalists point of view favors the 30-06 for reloading, because the 7.62X51mm/NATO is a non typical or not a standard G.I. issue infantry round from a modern military point of view. The 7.62x51mm/NATO falls into the same category as the .300win. and the .338 Lapua. Everybody knows that the M-16 platform utilising the 5.56x45mm cartridge replaced Americas only infantry the M-14 rifle in 7.62X51mm/NATO after Vietnam. The new 6.8 spc. (Special Purpose Cartridge) will replace all of them as a (DMR) Designated Marksmen Rifle!
*Last, as far as accuracy goes there was a feller by the name of Carlos Hathcock a.k.a. "White Feather" that said his favorite and most accurate sniper rifle was a Winchester Model 70 in 30-06. Mr. Hathcock a very famous USMC sniper also used a Remington 700 in 7.62X51mm/NATO in the latter days of his last tour in Vietnam for logistics reasons. He is in my opinion more than qualified to make such a statement!!!!!!!!!
